Marble Falls baseball beats Georgetown Gateway to win district series
The Marble Falls High School baseball team defeated Georgetown Gateway 10-8 April 4. Since the Mustangs captured two of the three contests with the Gators, they have won the series.
This is the second District 24-4A series Marble Falls has won with the third game against Gateway to be played at Scearce Field at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 6.
“We’ve seen two of their best arms,” Marble Falls head coach Tyler Porter said.
Gateway took a 2-0 lead in the first inning before the Mustangs scored seven in the second for a 7-2 advantage.
The Gators answered with two runs in the third to trim the deficit to 7-4. Marble Falls scored a run in the fifth inning, and Gateway scored two in their half of the inning to bring the score to 8-6. Both squads scored two runs in the seventh inning.
Marble Falls had 13 hits, while Gateway recorded 10.
“We just hit,” Porter said. “They had their good kid on the mound. He was throwing his fastball and his curveball. We have good hitters. We kept putting the ball in play.”
Isaias Roman had 2 RBIs. Cale Cochran had a single and a triple resulting in 1 RBI. Davis Dreisbach had 2 hits and a RBI. Bryce Atkinson had a triple and a walk. Kyle Curtis had a double and a single.
Pitcher Atkinson got the win by recording seven strikeouts in six innings. Jake Carter got the save.
About the only hurdle are the errors the Mustangs are making because they’re eager to make a play.
“It’s been a huge process,” Porter said. “We’re trying to do too much. We’re not used to playing with a lead. We got a ground ball we tried to turn for a double play. You’re trying to get outs and avoid the big inning.”
